What is Manual J?

Proper HVAC sizing starts with an accurate load calculation. Manual J, published by the Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA), is the industry-standard method for determining exactly how much heating and cooling capacity a home requires.

Without a proper Manual J, contractors are left guessing. Oversized equipment short-cycles, wastes energy, and fails to properly dehumidify. Undersized equipment runs constantly and still can't maintain comfort. Many municipalities now require a Manual J before a permit will be issued.
